Virginia Beach History
1607 - Early Virginia Beach History
Virginia Beach was first discovered by Europeans in 1607, by Captain John Smith. Covered in native pine forests, and with good beaches, the Captain then founded the New World's first
permanent settlement, Jamestown, up the nearby James River.
1883 - Virginia Beach becomes a resort
The "Princess Anne Hotel" marked the real start of Virginia Beach as a resort area. In 1883 a corporation had been formed to construct a railroad from Norfolk to the sandy white beaches
of Virginia Beach. Sunbathing and swimming were favored activities, but guests could also enjoy spa type treatments, and there was a casino, dance halls,
and Seaside Park was close by.
1963 - Virginia Beach annexes Princess Anne County
Annexing Princess Anne County was a major turning point for Virginia Beach. The small resort town became suddenly a bustling burg of 125,000 people. Virginia Beach soon became, and to
this day still is, the largest city in Virginia. Virginia Beach has continued to experience high growth of up to 50% between 1980 and 1990, and holds the Guinness Book record for the
world's largest pleasure beach.
2007 - Virginia Beach will celebrate 400 years since the fist landing!
